On the ballot to succeed [Pedro Nava]... are Republican Mike Stoker and Democrat Das Williams. The Star endorses Mr. Williams out of a belief that he has the outlook, energy and experience necessary to legislate responsibly while seeking creative, bipartisan solutions to the many problems facing the state. Also, Mr. Williams better reflects the views of a majority of the district’s residents, making it more likely that he will have a positive relationship with city and county officials in the district he will represent.
Mr. Stoker, an attorney and former member of the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, also is committed to work in a bipartisan manner. Yet, if elected, he would be up to his neck in advocacy battles for the ambitious reforms he has called for during this campaign.
Mr. Williams, as a member of the Santa Barbara City Council and onetime legislative aide to former Assemblywoman Hannah-Beth Jackson, also knows the need to forge alliances, and he likewise has pledged to work even with unlikely allies to make headway on important issues including the environment, pension reform and revenue to support public education...
