California Federation of Teachers and AFSCME Local 3299 endorse Wiliams
SANTA BARBARA, CA — Santa Barbara City Councilmember Das Williams announced today that his campaign for the 35th Assembly District has been endorsed by:
- AFSCME Local 3299 - sole endorsement
- California Federation of Teachers (CFT)
AFSCME Local 3299 represents 20,000 workers at all ten campuses of the University of California, as well as five medical centers, agricultural and marine research stations, and other facilities employing UC workers. CFT represents 120,000 faculty and other school employees in California’s public and private schools and colleges, starting from early childhood through higher education.
“As a product of California’s public schools, and world class community colleges and university system, I’ve experienced firsthand just how amazing our state’s education workforce is at every level,” said Das Williams. “I am so proud today to have earned the endorsement of organizations that represent the thousands of people serving this state’s students and driving its economy.”
“I know that Sacramento lawmakers have consistently broken California’s once unbreakable pact to fund education and give our children more opportunities to succeed,” added Williams. “I look forward to working with CFT, AFSCME Local 3299, and other leaders in the vital effort to restore California’s commitment to our education system and its workforce. After all, our state’s fiscal recovery and long term prosperity depend on it. ”
Das Williams has been a longtime champion for our education system and its employees. As a Santa Barbara City Councilmember and local school board member, he fought to avoid staff cuts to certificated teachers and classified employees at Peabody Charter School; allocated funds for a host of effective and popular after-school learning and sports programs; and secured the funding and location for the first new Youth Center in over a decade in Santa Barbara. Das has also been an outspoken critic of the Governor’s and Legislature’s consistent budget cuts to education funding and has stood alongside California’s students time and again in calling for an end to tuition fee hikes at our state’s universities and colleges.
Das’ campaign is supported by a number of local school board members, student groups and other education leaders and representatives in Santa Barbara, Ventura and statewide, including UPTE-CWA 9119-4, which represents employees at UC Santa Barbara.
